Coffee Nation Onboard

Learning Experience Design | Mobile Learning| Onboard training

Introduction

Coffee Nation is a collaborative university project completed as part of the Learning Experience Design course at Tampere University. Working in a multidisciplinary team of three, we designed a mobile-first onboarding experience that helps new employees develop essential barista skills through interactive learning, workplace practice, and continuous feedback.
My primary contribution focused on designing the evaluation strategy, creating the learning experience prototype in Articulate Storyline, and developing the overall visual presentation and user interface of the concept.

Responsibilities: UI/UX design; Articulate Storyline Development; Visual Presentation
Target audience: New employees joining Coffee Nation as part of a two-week onboarding program.
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Canva, ChatGPT

Overview

Designed for new employees as a mobile learning concept that combines digital learning with real workplace practice. Following the ADDIE instructional design framework, the project introduces new employees to company values, coffee preparation, customer service, and health and safety through interactive modules, simulations, and workplace assessments.

Project Goals

  • Design an engaging onboarding experience for new employees.
  • Combine digital learning with authentic workplace practice.
  • Support learners through continuous feedback and assessment.
  • Create a scalable training experience suitable for multiple store locations.

My Contributions

Unlike my individual projects, this was a collaborative design project.

✅ Designing the complete evaluation strategy following the ADDIE framework.

✅ Developing learner evaluation methods across multiple levels, including learner feedback, learning analytics, and workplace performance assessment.

✅Designing the Storyline prototype used to present the learning experience.

✅ Creating the visual layout, screen designs, and presentation flow.

✅ Working closely with teammates to integrate our individual components into one coherent learning solution.

Evaluation Strategy

One of my main responsibilities was designing the evaluation framework.

The evaluation plan combines three complementary levels:

Level 1 – Learner Experience

Collect learner feedback using in-app ratings and open-ended comments to evaluate navigation, content quality, and engagement.

Level 2 – Learning Analytics

Track learner interactions through quizzes, simulations, and xAPI statements to understand engagement, progress, and performance patterns beyond completion rates.

Level 3 – Workplace Performance

Evaluate learners during real workplace practice using structured observation forms completed by senior baristas, managers, and HR to determine readiness for independent work.

Reflection

This project strengthened several areas of my instructional design practice.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team taught me how to collaborate effectively, balance different perspectives, and integrate multiple design ideas into a cohesive learning solution.

Designing the evaluation strategy deepened my understanding of learning analytics, xAPI, and how assessment can measure not only knowledge acquisition but also workplace performance.

Finally, translating our team’s ideas into a Storyline prototype challenged me to think about usability, visual hierarchy, and learner experience while presenting a complex concept clearly and engagingly.
